About Us
Our club was founded for the purpose of preserving our German American heritage, language, and traditions in harmony with the American way of life. We also wish to promote German American relations on a personal, community and national level. We want to engender fellowship and mutual interest in activites that strengthens the German American Bond.
History
The Dover German American Club was founded in the Bicentennial year 1976 by Margot Ostruska and Waltraud Owens.
The founding members were mostly spouses of military personnel and meetings and events took place on Dover AFB. Their goal was and still is to preserve their German heritage and traditions.
After people from the local community became members, meetings and functions moved off Base. Meetings are held on the last Monday of each month at the Modern Maturity Center. The highlight of the Club’s events is the annual Oktoberfest, held on the 3rd Saturday in October at the Modern Maturity Center.
We are proud that our club has grown to over 100 members, and has prospered and established its imprint in the Dover community.
Community Involvement
Every year the club works hard to provide several group gatherings for social enrichment. One of these gatherings is a grand affair in which residents from Kent County and surrounding areas look forward attending. Finally, the club uses proceeds from various fund raisers to donate to local organizations and to our military heroes stationed abroad.
